I believe that when history looks back on our day and age, they will refer to the 'war on terrorism' as WW3 and not the cold war. It has all the hallmarks of a world war, albeit with a new twist. Instead of war between groupings of nations we have a war between nations and groups with multi-national reach and influence. Al-Queida, Hamas, Hezbollah and other such groups are armies without borders (or uniforms which make them hard to confront) operating across the globe against established nations. The struggle is world wide and so qualifies as WW3 as far as I am concerned. When it is all said and done, I think history will bear this out and fix 9-11 as its' starting date.

I think some people resist this notion because popular culture has painted the possibility of WW3 as mankind's last war which will devastate the planet and obliterate the human race.

I don't believe N Korea will get involved in it, but Iran probably will. Kim Jung il is a blow hard and will be easily contained by Japan, Taiwan and S Korea once we allow those countries to go nuclear. (Rumor has it that Japan who has the world's second largest supply of plutonium next to the US is already half way there.)

No.
The North Korea crisis is not even in motion anymore. Till next time something happens there, which could be years from now. The Lebanon crisis is becoming a stalemate, and is a smaller war than past Mideast wars.

Historians consider the cold war to be WW3 because of all the resources used. Anyway, not yet. It doesn't look that bad yet.
