It isn't real music by any stretch of the imagination. Can't they have a category of their own and stop cluttering it up for the rest of us?

you clearly have only heard the mediocre garbage that represents hip hop in the corporate/mtv/bet/radio world. while it is very popular, it only represents a very small percentage of the hip hop music that has been made in the last 25+ years. try listening to X-clan, or Freestyle Fellowship, Busdriver, DJ Qbert, Ultramagnetic MCs, (could go on and on) i agree that the hip hop that you are most likely referring to is total garbage, but you might want to check out some of the good stuff, it might change your mind about hip hop- hip hop is a beautiful, complex culture that has contributed more to the world of art in the last 20 years than most people give it credit for in the form of graffiti, breakdancing, and rap music.

Because rap R&B and hip-hop ARE forms of REAL music!! It takes people who aren't truly ignorant to appreciate it for what it is. And R&B's more romantic slow jams anyway, so it shouldn't be roped in with hip-hop/rap which is a totally different genre of MUSIC!! It's like separating rock into classic, alternative, indie, etc. And it might be better for us to have our own category so us rap/r&b/hip-hop fans don't have to worry about the degrading ignorant people like you who just don't understand the true meaning behind the music.

Do you even know what rap even stands for. Rythmic American Poetry.a.
I found this in a dictionary to show you that rap is music. A form of popular music developed especially in African-American urban communities and characterized by spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a syncopated, repetitive rhythmic accompaniment.
b. A composition or performance of such music
R&B is music I don't have to give the definition of R&B to show you that it is considered music.

Hey stupid, rap, r&b and hip hop are music. Not because you may not like them you don't consider them to be music. Stop hating on these music categories. If you don't like them just don't listen to them and move on with your life. Stop being a dumbazz.

Right again, Banwa. By definition, music consists of melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. Rap does NOT have a melody. This question doesn't pass judgment. It simply asks for reasoned clarification. So, no. Technically, rap is not and should not be called music.
