How do you feel about being "friends" vs. relationships (two questions in one)?

1. Can you become friends and then progress into a relationship without feeling "weird" about it? I'm asking this because I've had several girls tell me "we can't date now that we're friends, that would just be too 'weird'."

2. Can you break up with somebody, but continue to be friends with them? For me I have no issue with this unless they betrayed me or crossed a big line with me (like if a girl set my car on fire because she saw me looking at another girl).

1) I don't think so, it WOULD be weird to me. We could progress into friends after we starting dating, but I agree with you on the weirdness level of that prospect.

2) yes. did it several times. We were better friends than bf/gf. I agree with you on the crossing the line, though. Cheating or other wild behavior that betrays trust is a break up not only in the relationship department, but as friends as well.

I've experienced both, trust me it is always better to be friends first, that way you already know the person's personality and who they are so you can tell if they're compatible with you.

I've plenty of ex-boyfriends that I'm still good friends with. There is however one that I'm not friends with anymore but that's because he cheated. And it is a bit weird going back to being "just friends" but if that person was a good friend before the relationship why throw away a good friendship on account of the relationship not working out?

I have become friends a guy I used to date now that I'm married. My husband knows about it and doesn't mind. BUT the guy never did anything crazy like setting my car on fire. And I never did anything crazy to him.

Yes and yes. Been there done that. And the 2nd question is in progress right now with my friend. They just (a month ago) broke up. But are very good friends. No not the friends with benefits type either. Just good friends. I think because they didnt break up harshly. It was a mutual breakup, but they also believe they dont "belong" together.
