My husband, myself and some other people were in the california desert during a thunderstorm yesterday.A "twirling" wind was spotted, larger than any dustdevil we had seen. Two kids had debri(awning and tree branches) fall on them, fences were shredded,it had branches inside it as it was moving. It showed up a minute or so after some activity(lightning, sprinkle of rain, thunder) came from the storm.

Sounds like a small tornado. Over water they are called water spouts. Sometimes they spin around a larger tornado.

It sounds like a small F1 tornado to me. I have seen several tornados and the smaller ones do exactly what you said this one did. Hope you had a camera and got some pics!
