you can put reflective material in the windows like those silver screens you see in car windows. They reflect the light from the windows so it doesn't turn into as much heat through the windows. THen you could also get more fans and some nice big steel mixing bowls and then get some blocks of ice and put the ice in the bowl and position the bowl infront of the fan. As the fan blows air over the ice, the ice cools down the air. Or you could get a portable air conditioner if you can aford it.

There really is no good way to cool (remove the heat) from your home without air-conditioning unless you plan on living underground. Fans stir up the hot air that seems to act more like a blast furnace when the mercury hits 90 and above.
In the days before A/C my family laid low and kept the drapes shut. We put fans in the North window and shut the windows to the South as they let in the most heat.
If all else fails, a nice porch and a glass of ice water might do the trick. I'm glad we have a/c and I wish you did too.

It's rough I know we (St. Louis) just had a freakish storm that took out electricity in about 500,000 homes or more, combined with a heat wave. I went 4 days without even a fan. Let alone AC. I just bought ICE and at night I kept the windows open. Then during the day I kept the shades closed. I put bandanna's in the ice, with towels. I alternated them. The other thing was water. and cold showers. to cool down. It still isn't over.
If you feel faint call someone right away. Your not alone.
In ancient times the Romans and the Epytans had large shallow pools of water that was the cooling system. The breeze blowing over the water cooled the air. You can down size it with a kiddy pool full of ice water and fan.

Anything that will cool the air that the fan is pushing will help. A wet towel far enough behind the fan that it does not get sucked in is a help. covering all windows that are on the sunny side will also help. open the house up during the coolest part of the night then close her down for the heat of the day.

Iknwo you can plant trees on one side of your house that will help over all. Take a shower that will beat the heat right now. And this is cheep AC but you can take a bowl of ice and put it infront of a fan. Let theair hit the ice and blow all the cool air fromt he melting ice on tou. Now you will be the only one who will get anything from this but ifit gets that hot your not going to want anyone around you anyways lol. And make the shower warm. This will regulate your body tempature. Drinks LOTS of cool water, not cold cause it could throw off the body tempature and make you hotter in a matter of minutes.

Hey,
If you have curtain rods on your windows then the best thing would be to hang thick wet clothes (which would cover the window entirely) tuck the bottom part so as the water doesn't drip indoors. Now keep your windows open, the water on the clothes will cool the breeze down. [its the same way an air-cooler works] ..so I am sure this is gonna work for you too :o) ...the only problem is that you have to wet the clothes every now and then.
Cheers.

You can help by putting a fan in a window facing out to help vent the hot air inside the house. My dad had an up-stairs apartment once and it stayed pretty comfortable by opening a window in a back bedroom and at the same time having a fan blowing out in the front window of the apartment, which created an air-flow through the apartment.

Keep all your doors and windows shut. My mom used to put newspapers up in the windows, and that worked quite well. I used to use tar paper (thick black paper), and stapled it to the outside of the windows, and it worked amazingly well (made the house dark, but it really helped keep things cool). You should at least try and get yourself a fan, that would help a lot too.

DO NOT Keep your windows closed! That is dangerous! Keep them open with the blinds down, put the fan in front of you, wipe yourself with a cool cloth. I would advise you to go to a community building where you can stay in the air conditioning. Call your library, they will know where you can go.

You can't cool the house, but what you can do is wet a face cloth and wipe it over your hands, feet, face and pulse points (wrists, back of knees etc). Then stand in front of the fan and the evaporation of the water will make you feel cooler. Keep doing this and keep cool.
PS - remember to drink enough water to keep hydrated.
