My dad was victim of scamming. He was told that a Mortgage company was going to to use his credit to buy some old houses and repair them to be sold a year later. My dad would recieve an amount of money for doing this favor.
My dad didnt speak English so he basically he didnt know what he was doing. A year later we started recieving all this phone calls from three mortgage companies "This is an important call, please contact..."
We never thought it was related to what my dad did a year back, but one day I called in and they told us we were not paying the mortgage dues. My dad was always careful with makeing payments on time, so we thought it was a mistake.
We ran a credit check report and we found out my dad owed $854,212 to three different mortgage companies.
So we are screwed!

Yeah I've been scammed. Someone used my name and date of birth and opened up a credit card under my old address. The ran up over 1,000 pounds (I'm from the UK so feel free to translate!!) of debt and I only found out because the debt collectors contacted me. I reported this to the police got a crime reference no and after quite a bit of wrangling it got sorted. It was horrible at the time, but now I've learned to shred every document before I put it in the garbage!!!

If you do not check a company before entering into a transaction, you could lose your money, time and credibility. Some widely used resources are the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the national fraud center (www.fraud.org) these days, you can easily find out more about a company using the internet in a few minutes. From a company's website, you can details about its ownership, how old the company really is and feedback from the company's customers.
You can find more detailed information about a company at http://tinyurl.com/gtb89

my sister was scammed by two men in New York City who claimed they had a winning lottery ticket, but were unable to claim the prize because they weren't U.S. Citizens. They asked her for only $500.00, although the face value of the ticket was like $5,000.00. She gave the the $500.00 and the ticket was bogus.

This is so cheesy, but I had a guy (I'm a girl) use my social security number to get food stamps and state aid under his name! I called the social security people and they told me that they couldn't do anything that the state would have to. I called the state and they said they couldn't do anything, the social security people would have to. I talked to a lawyer and he told me that it would be too involved to do anything cause it's just food stamps, he didn't steal from me. I can't even get a new social out of it, so according to where I used to live I'm the one with the bad social security number, not this jerk of a guy who was using mine.
