Hydrometers measure densities of the electrolyte in batteries not voltages. So you do not need a hydrometer to check whether the battery is fully charged or not. You need a DC voltmeter.

I use a volt meter to check the voltage. Most current batteries are sealed and you can't use a hydrometer.

I used a floating ball type, calibrated for the specific gravity needed for lead-acid cells. Auto parts stores still sell them.
