i don't know i saw a clip on TV today it showed about 5 different cats using the toilet.. (vh1) i have a cat and 3 dogs. 2 of my dogs are smart as hell. but my cat is pretty smart too.i have actually moved form one state to another with him. and the same day i moved in to my new house in the new state i let him outside and
he would wander off but always comes back home.. he does not use a litter box he only goes outside. if i take a walk he goes with me.but my dogs seem to understand everything i say.when im sleeping they they try to weasel there way in bed. not that a 120 lb
Doberman can weasel his way anywhere. but all i have to say is out. and they leave the room. if i say wanna go for a walk they will go grab there leash.they know not to come in the kitchen.
by the same token my 3rd dog has a box of rocks for a brain..
so i think it all depends on the pet.. I'm going to go with monkeys
i think they are the smartest..lol

All those dog lovers have not spent much time watching a cat, one of the smartest animals in the animal kingdom. He never relies on anyone completely for his needs, always suspicious of things around him, lovable when it suits his needs and nearly perfectly designed to live and survive in our world. All of these attributes multiplied many times over makes the lion the king of the jungle and top predator in the food chain. You do not get to the top of anything by being dumb.

"Cleverness" is mostly subjective. Dogs are generally more loyal, and have larger vocabularies, and learn more "tricks", but then cats get fed & housed without doing as much work!

cats are smarter because they are sleeping while dogs are working hard: guard the house, take care the children, playing with us, ...
cats are smarter because we feed them but we can't force them to do anything for us. They come and go as if they are our boss.

Dogs are loyal, but stupid. They cannot exist on their own, having to pack together.

Cats are instinctive, but independent. They can exist on their own.

Cats don't need you, dogs do. That's why so many people have dogs, because they like to feel needed.
