I met this person..and her child was carrying a pet mouse..which i thought a little unusual, but was more unusual was that this child's mother also added that her daughter had a pet "rat"..yeah no kidding..Now should i run..or is this "normal" behaviour.
I personally think this is wierd but maybe I am wrong..and just don't like rodents.

How old was the child? Depends...was it bought at the pet store or just "Caught at Random," and made into a pet? Two years ago, my Daughter and Son-In-Law came over, to give me a "Birthday Present." As they walked towards me, (I was sitting outside), my son-in-law carried something that was covered up. As he approached, he sat it on the picnic table. Well, he uncovered it. It was a cage (very pretty, colorful cage with a running wheel. You guessed it...3 mice!!!!! Cute, one was white, black & white, and grey. I was in a state of shock!!! I was expecting Perfume or something. Well, I couldn't keep them, in my Apartment. I had him come over, to clean the Cage, when I did have them. I didn't know whether to "laugh or to cry." (Really)!

Well, to answer your question--If it is a "Regular"
MOUSE, or RAT, (not from a Pet Store), that is something to be "concerned" about. They may CARRY RABIES. I can't imagine a RAT!!!!!!

My son has a pet mouse, she's very sweet and friendly. It's a nice easy pet for a child to "take care of" even though everyone knows that the parent will end up taking care of the pet in the long run. Rats are kind of nasty but I have seen them as pets. I don't think you should run for this reason alone. If you have a problem with rats/mice you should just tell her that it makes you uncomfortable and I'm sure she will make sure that her child doesn't bring one over to you or ask you to hold it.

I had both as pets as a child. The whole family reacted terribly to both but the eventually warmed up to my pets.
There is nothing wrong in having either as a pet. It is a personal choice of the individual.
Having rodents as pets is no different than having a dog or cat.
Its alright that you do not like rodents. I would suggest that you advise the family in a very discreet and respectful manner. If they don't respect you for being honest then I would say you have a whole other ball game to deal with.

Nothing strange about that. Rats and Mice are just another kind of rodent, it's like having a guinea pig, or a hamster, or a gerbil. My sister and I have always had rats. Like all small rodents, they're very friendly when handled alot, incredibly intelligent, and are very economical to keep. From a veterinary point of view, rats are very susceptible to cancer, but thats about the only downside to them. Oh, and they can have a tendency to eating other rodents. But not if they're fed correctly.

Most of my friends had pet rodents when I was young. Usually it was a guinea pig or mouse. I wasn't allowed because my mom was afraid of them.

yes its normal to have a pet mouse, but i dont think its normal to go around carrying it places. It would be normal if it was kept in a cage

I had a pet White rat when I was young. (I'm 52 now)
It was house trained and would go back in its cage to potty.
Tiny, that was his name, would even come when I called him and climb up my leg and sit on my shoulder.

My neice wanted one when she was 4 years old, and still wants one now that she's 14, but her Mother (my sister) wouldnt let her. (She asked for one before she even knew I had one as a kid.)

He was a lot better trained than my sister's current dog. (she has had it over a year and it still messes up DAILY,LOL)
