I'm running a workshop at a girls school to kids aged 11-14 based on the musical Grease. I have very limited resources. It has to last a day and half. What can I do to fill up that time!

It's very unspecific, it just has to centre around Grease. I'm really quite stuck here...

I've just come back from an audition where there was a workshop in the morning for a few hours! This is what we did: first, we all sat around in a circle and said who we were, what was our favourite theatrical moment (could be either something we've seen of been in), what was out favourite movie and one thing nobody in the room knew about us (or hardly anyone knew!). Then we did some group vocal warm ups, and then sang a song that's in the play together at first, then in groups and then we all had a line to sing solo (when the song ended it repeated so everybody got a chance to sing solo - whether they were good or not, it's about putting in your all and making it your own!). Finally, we learnt a dance to the same song step by step, practiced it a bit and then split into groups to do the dance and sing at the same time!
After that, we went into auditioning but, at first ew were given a part of the script we'd not seen before and in groups we took it in turn to act these other characters - you might be playing a guy even if you are a girl and vice versa - it didn't matter just as long as you gave it your all!
Something we didn't do this morning but what I've done in the past is to pair everyone up and one person starts by saying the first word that pops into their head, like 'pillow', and the other person woud respond by saying the first word that popped into their head. It's supposed to break the ice - all sorts can be said as you can imagine. It's fun though!

Simple ... do a brain stormer on and around the the musical ... you know, how the 50's changed the face of music with the intruduction of rock and roll, how cars took a leap into the design future, how coffee and soda bars took off and gave teenagers their very first place to meet and chill out, how clothes and hairstyles moved up a gear and became a marker for that period, how dancing/jiving became a major leisure activity, how young people actually enjoyed themselves and socialised more, how keeping up with each other became more and more important with the right clothes, make up, hairstyles, cars etc, the advent of DooWop music and poor people harmonising on street corners, how TV came into our lives yet seemed so primative then compared to now. Also how the 50's set up a very important time marker between the end of the Victorian era and today ( compare everything in 1900, then onto the 50's and finally the present day ..... talk about changes over that 100 years and the dramatic changes. Take it one step further and project into the year 2050 and again 2100 and make guesses at how life may again so radically change, as it sure will. Talk about the Brylcreem boys of the 50's ... will that style make a comeback ... can you actually buy Brylcreem today? And overall look at the total changes in technology in the last 100 years, keeping the fifties firmly in mind. Where did the world wide web come from? How did we communicate in the 50's. No mobiles there! Good luck ...

why are you running a workshop which you need to ask for help with somewhere like this? Its pretty easy to do loads with grease. Watch the film a few times. Loads of pink ladies. Hand jiving. its serious girly fun. should not be challenging at all. Am wondering who got you to run a workshop like this? You must have done something good before surely?!!

Here are some topics.
1. Social groupings, high school cliques, bosom buddies, etc.
2. Peer pressure
3. Stereotypes
4. Gender issues (boys and what they tell their friends, girls and what they expect from boys)
5. Cars: ownership, care, design... and have them designed their ideal cars... or make paper-box cars and race them, trading pink slips until a small group has enuogh cars to open a used car lot...
6. have them choose roles and act out scenes. Switch genders and have them act out scenes. Discuss why it felt unnatural or why it was funny the second time round.
7. Teachers vs. students; rules vs. fun
8. Safe sex, responsibility
9. School spirit
10. Music and the emotions that it evokes... why certain styles of music were chosed for particular parts of the play
11. Extracurricular activities and how they can build experience and be fun.
12. responsibility vs fun
13. clothing and hairstyles of that time. What different people wore.

have fun!

What a weird and unusual theme for a workshop. They could have costume design competitions and dress up like people in those days. Hairdo sessions.
Sing the songs?
I dont know... it's kinda tough actually to cater to 11-14 year olds.

Why don't you get them to perform the songs from it? Some can do the singing / acting and others can do scenery etc.
Get them to bring it clothes from home that they can use as cotumes and set up some chairs etc for the scenes
Girls of that age will love it and i bet you that they will all know the songs and dances off by heart already!

Maybe have a bunch of songs from the film, split them into groups to design a dance to their song, and have them all perform for each other?

Or, you could set them all on fire.

It really is your choice.

Worse comes to worse you can always teach singing.

Just grab yourself a karaoke edition of the soundtrack.
