There are a lot of similarities between Roman republc and later empire and USA.
First they have a lot of pride in anouncing that their form of democracy has sources in Roman republic. But as time pases, we see a lot of other more disturbing similarities, major resource spender ( all roads go to Rome), military superpower, moral decadence ( sex and porno industry), and a lot of people expecting to see the other side, what would be, or perhaps is now, going from republic to empire, only USA does not have a candidate for an emperor. So they are still stuck in pre empire status , with all negative sides that roman republic then had , a lot of dumm politics, coruption, talk talk, and still grabing resources from all of the antique world to make Rome great, also idiom of a citizen,in old Rome you had a Roman citizen ,then free man, then a slave , and a worth of a Roman citizen was above all other population of conquered countries.
Today we see the same with american citizens, 1 death of american is worth 5 to 8 european deaths, and up to 100 and more deaths of population in third world countries, when it is publicized on news.
Yes we remember what happened with them, but after them you other empires that succseeded each other finishing with British empire, and now USA making a new kind of "empire" in the world .But I think we see beginigs of other similar groups of military power economy, China in fa east, EU in Europe with Russia, USA prevalent in NAFTA, Australia in South Pacific, Africa is still undecided but Libiya, Nigeria,South Africa are in the lead, middle East is a battlefield, but there are countrie that pretend to ascend to trone by military power there is Iran, by economy UAR,Saudiarabia,Katar.
So perhaps we will see these strongholds develop in some kind of futuristic superblocks, or something entirely else.

Yes. But you can't compare them that easily. USA is a republic, Rome was an empire. Rome started worthless wars so they could imprison the people and own the land. USA starts wars to free the people and give them back the land.
USA is more influential than Rome ever was. If america fell tomorrow then Europe, AUstralia, Canada, Russia, China, etc.. would go with it.
Nevermind the fact that the Romans were warmongerers, USA always stood for what is right in wars.
Also, if you are comparing the two nations, USA has a long long life ahead of us-- America is only hundred years old, Rome was older.
And about the guy who said Rome ended with corruption in the government-- Rome was always corrupt. Rome ended by taking in hoards of immigrants and getting invaded by Vikings, starting countless wars, etc..
so your theory is flawed.
Also, may I ask why everyone wants the USA to end? Lets imagine China takes over. China would eventually take Taiwan, Mongolia, and Siberia. Are these imperielist people you would want as a superpower? Or Russia? Or the EU? The EU would do nothing to help anyone-- they would cowardly walk away from every issue. Just watch.

If so, it is only for the blink of an eye in historic terms. It was moments ago that the Wall fell and Russia backed from center stage. EU is pulling together (sporadically) and China is already a power. India won't be far behind. Things are just settling into a different balance in my opinion.
Our current administration possibly aside, we don't want to be Rome. Our country was perfectly happy in a sheltered back seat a la Canada when Great Britain ruled the waves, which is why we didn't join the League of Nations after WWI. We would most of us be thrilled in the event Australia cared to shoulder the mantle. Then we could go back to anonymous industry, which is what we do best.
Flash Virus does make a point. I am not sure you would want a vacuum where we are. What we need is a global contender with a better plan, or a unified approach.
The latter would be grand, but I think it is an unrealistic hope, at least in my lifetiime.

In some ways I do see in our own culture similarities with the culture of Rome that craved the blood of the Gladiators. We watch things like the Ultimate Fighting Championships where people are brutalized, however, consensually. Even things such as "the Fear Factor" and "Big Brother" and reality shows pitting one against the other are less barbarous forms of the gladitorial display.
Sex, as purported by historian Jacques Barzun seems to become an act void of any discretion in the last days of societies. Whether Hollywood reflects reality or not, I wonder, but depictions of orgies and rabid sexual promiscuity are so commonplace on television and at the theaters to make one at least wonder about reality. Homosexuality and sexual perversions are flourishing with gay pride days and transvestites and transgendered individuals speaking about their behavior as if it is normal and even natural. In general, hedonism of the flesh masks the spiritual pains and social disconnect that citizens have with their political organization and its functionings near their society's end.
All "empires" eventually fall as they become over-extended militarily. America is not quite an empire because we claim no lands outside our own borders; however, we do have a military presence in countless places on the globe.
I am optimistic about America though, because we are a democracy, and all that is necessary to survive nationally is common sense - and I believe we are about to revolt against the elitism of our politicians and bureaucrats.

No, the Roman empire was controlled by Rome by an invading army for Rome. They controlled most of central Europe. Where is the US army in comparison ?

Yeah they lasted 500 years. Considering the USA is 230 years old. Looks like you'll never see another ruler in your life time. Best thing for you to do is Cry.

Rome was taken down by allowing the barbarians (Goths) to over run it's borders much like we allow illegal aliens to over run ours. Maybe we are the new Rome.
