Depending on the age of your house, go to the local city (town) hall (some areas hold these records at the library) and pull the records on your particular plot of land and any permits pulled for that site.

Your local building department and the zoning board should have that information on file. If they do not have the information on hand they can point you in the right direction on where to go to get it.
