I recently discovered why my house is a fly magnet~ neighborhood cats are using the area that I have planted my shrubbery, an area enclosed by a retaining wall, as a litter box! I thought squirrels were digging bulbs up, but it was cats pooping all along. I am so disgusted! I cleaned as much as I could dig out, but do I need to change the dirt out altogether? How can I effectively keep them out? I don't have any mulch or anything around the shrubbery, it's all dirt~should I change this? PLEASE HELP!

This might sound a little crazy but I read it in a gardening secret book- Put out banana and orange peels. The cats are supposed to really hate them. It is supposed to keep the cats from using your lawn like a litterbox.

The thing with cats is, and I never liked them and now I have three that I LOVE, if they are indoor cats, meaning no outside at all, they behave just like dogs. Mine always use the litter box and never have hairballs and they are in perfect health. An indoor cat has a longer life expectancy.

I have heard that black pepper is a good deterrant but as I don't know how big your garden is, it might be more trouble than its worth.
Better still, go to your local garden centre, I'm sure they can offer advice either by way of sprays or maybe even certain plants deter cats from defacating on your lawn!

Cat's hate acidy or vinegar scents; try filling up some plastic bottles and inserting into the ground of the "pooping area"; also, moth balls....throw a bunch on top of the dirt....also, they may not be cats, but raccoons....good luck!

First politely tell your neighbors of your problem. Maybe they will keep their cats inside. Let them know you will contact animal control to have them trapped if the problem continues. Trap the cats if the problem continues.
In many cities, it is illegal to allow a cat out of the owners property.
I know this sounds cruel but actually it is the cat owners who let there cats roam that are cruel. They are exposing their pets to disease, fights with other cats or dogs, deadly roads, wild animals etc.

i tried the pepper... it did not work... chicken wire cut up in usable pieces and layed around the area...they dont like to walk on it... or use rocks as mulch... the cats in my area use my daylilies as a kittie box... they flatten them, lay on them for a while and then eventually pee on them... this year i finally realized it was them again (i forgot from last year--then it was only one plant--this year 3 plants)... so i encircled 2 separate plants with chicken wire (i weaved wood stakes into it so i could poke it into the ground for stability thru the night) and on the grouping of 3 (one only being pee'd on tho) i placed bended/shaped chicken wire right on top of the plants ...in the morning i removed it all.... i did this for about 2 weeks... they have not been around since.... that was early spring....

We put out black pepper. We are putting used coffee grounds in the yard to find out if they work. It takes some time to save it. I read that it works to keep cats from doing their numbers. I read Star Bucks gives it away. Critter ridder is sold in places that sell bug sprays.

Mulch isn't going to help. I've heard of trying moth balls. It's supposed to repel them.. Or maybe try some paprika or chili powder. If the come over to relieve themselves, and they kick up chili powder, I don't expect they'll want to come back..

Cats are under the same rules and regulations as dogs are. You can complain to animal control
