my friend and i went to a liquor store yesterday where i was going to make a purchase. the owner told my friend she could not come in the store because she worked at another liquor store

No, it is not legal to deny your friend access because the friend works for a competitor. Only if your friend was stealing or making comments to other customers, or checking prices so the other store could undercut would there be grounds.

Well technically I suppose the owner can allow or disallow various persons to enter his premises, however its not exactly good business. It would be worth checking to see on what grounds a person can be barred entry but my advice would be for you and her friend to no longer use his store!

Why fight it. I doubt if it is legal, but it could cost you more money to argue the point in court. I do think that the owner has a sign saying " we can refuse service to any one "

Sure it's legal. Businesses are private property, and can refuse entry/service to anyone they like for any reason.

I am not sure, a store is a private place owned by someone, they don't have to serve everyone. To be sure though I would talk to a lawyer.
