Kids love group activities where they get to solve a problem or create something. You can also play a game with them to review a concept. I like to do things where the students have the opportunity to be creative such as power points, art projects, skits, or creative writing.
I really find that most of the time I am the best energizer for my students. I'm not saying it to be boastful--it's a necessity for a teacher to be an entertainer to some extent. Even when I am having my students take notes I am sure to use inflection in my voice so I am not monotone. I have interesting anecdotes to go along with the information I am providing. Also, I make sure to continually engage the students by asking them questions about what they are learning--examples: what do you think happened next, what does this word mean, what is this similar to, what is your opinion about this, etc.
Lastly, at the beginning of each school year I have my students take a multiple intelligence quiz (you can do a search for one on the Internet and then modify it for your own needs). This shows me the ways that my students learn and allows them to make suggestions for they ways they want to be taught. It has really been a big help to me.
Good Luck!

I have yet to follow through on my threat to impose mousercizing on my high schoolers, but I will occasionally make them get up, march around the room, maybe do a few jumping jacks. Or at least stand up and stretch.
I only do this when we have some activities where they have to sit and listen for a while and I can see them fading. Ordinarily, I avoid this by mixing up activities. I try to spend no more than 40 minutes doing one thing and require at least one activity per 90 minute period that they have to get up and go somewhere else, usually to work with partners or groups, maybe to participate in a vocabulary game (in Spanish class).
One little trick that is probably the simplest and most effective is the mini water cooler. It cost me maybe $10 at Wal-Mart (the first one, which died after a year, but my $13 one from Office Depot's going strong). I freeze some water in it over night, fill it up in the morning, and keep some conical cups by it. This way they can rehydrate their brains and have an excuse to get up without leaving class or disturbing others. This year, I plan on passing off the filling and freezing responsibilities to student helpers, so it'll be even easier!

I teach 8th graders, and for fun, for a mental break, and for a good stretch, I learned a few simple Yoga exercises that could be done standing by a desk. When I see them slipping into "the Zone", we take a Yoga break. The crack-up seeing each other attempt the poses (plus they laugh at me, too), and it gives the entire class a little break and stretch, so they can focus again.
Good luck!

A lot depends on what class you're teaching and at what level. In college my chemisty professor taught us how to balance chemical equations by feeding us brownies and balancing the brownie recipe, we learned compounds by using Play-doh, remember that people are interested in food and no one is too old to play. Fun games, especially if you have prizes (candy always worked for us), funny anything that they can relate to should work.

caffeine! kidding. Intersperse deskwork w/brief periods of physical activity, calesthentics, tossing a ball or beanbag around the room, something to get the blood pumping more oxygen to the brain. This is appropriate for any age, 0-99!

ingesting ice water can help wake one up, without the energy of sweet or coming up a caffiene habit (it truly is easy to do even as in college). mainly, i imagine it truly is way less confusing to pay interest, stay wakeful and get sturdy grades if one sits in route of the front of the kind. if you're in college quite than severe college, it might want to help to agenda your instructions around the cases once you're wider wakeful. (No 8 or 9 am instructions if you're an afternoon man or woman.) attempt to get more effective sleep than you imagine you may want to wish. attempt to eat as healthy as attainable, take supplementations and get workout. i comprehend, a lot less confusing suggested than performed, however it enables. attempt to upward push up early sufficient interior the morning to bathe, have breakfast, and only awaken, so that you experience more energizing once you walk out the door. also attempt to keep a consistent agenda even on weekends. in case you not sleep plenty later on Friday and Saturday, you get off agenda and are more effective possibly to have difficulty falling asleep Sunday evening, for this reason you experience drained on Monday. evaluate seeing a health care professional if issues do not advance related to your sleepiness.

what age group? Middle school level, bizarre behavior on your part (not self embarrassing) works.
Also, you must be enthusiastic and vibrant and psychotic and circus barker all at once. Ask them to tell you about the up coming space elevator, bjarni herjolfson, or who was truly the first president of America.

Try some group processing : i.e. before starting, have them follow some commands, like : touch your head-thank you, look at the ceiling-thank you, feel your chair-thank you, touch your buddy-thank you, look at me-thank you, clap your hands-thank you, etc.,until the whole class is laughing and / or cheering up! You'll see, students will be very up toned and lesson will be a piece of cake!!!!
