Higher educaiton (college) is not mandatory to be an author; however, the writing skills often associated with the college level do come in handy.
Authors must be able to articulate their story. You can hire an editor to correct simple grammatical errors. My daughter edits some pretty rough stuff!
If you would like to see how your writing stacks up, try writing for a local newspaper. You don't have to be a full-time or actual employee to free-lance. Most newspapers are written on a 5th-9th grade level. All you have to lose is the time involved.
Good luck!

You'd better know how to spell, you'd better be excellent with the grammatical stuff you'd better read a lot, have a good imagination and have something interesting to say. All of this has precious to do with the number of years you study: some people are published authors while the yare still in the sixth grade, while others go through "Creative Writing Programs" in college and aren't worth spit.

The schooling is good to have ( recommend it), but basically if have the talent, that's all you need. A "foot in the door" is a help too.
Many authors are self motivated. Gone With the Wind is a perfect example. Written by a "nobody".

For fiction, you only need to know how to write. No schooling is necessary except for what you think you need to know about writing. For non-fiction, you MUST have either schooling or extensive experience in order for people to take you seriously on most subjects.
