Excellent question!
The song is called " Nightshift " and it was the first release for the Commodores after lead singer, Lionel Richie, left the group. It was released in December 1985 and climbed all the way to #3 on Billboard's Hot 100. The song was a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, two legendary rock artists who died tragically
Gaye had 56 hits including " I Heard It Through The Grapevine ", " Let's Get On " and " Sexual Healing ". After an angry dispute, he was shot by his father on 4/1/84 and died as a result.
Many people think Jackie Wilson was the greatest vocal performer of all time; even Elvis Presley copied some of his dance moves. He had 54 hit records including " Lonely Teardrops ", (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher and " Baby Workout ". Wilson suffered a stroke while performing onstage at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on September 25, 1975. He spent the rest of his life in a nursing home before dying January 21st, 1984.

Marvin, he was a friend of mine,
And he could sing a song,
His heart in every line,
Marvin sang of the joy and pain,
He opened up our minds,
And I still can hear him say,
Aw talk to me so you can see,
What's going on,
Say you will sing your songs,
Forevermore (evermore),
Gonna be some sweet sounds,
Coming down on the nightshift,
I bet you're singing proud,
Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd,
Gonna be a long night,
It's gonna be all right,
On the nightshift,
Oh you found another home,
I know you're not alone,
On the nightshift…

"Nightshift" by The Commodores. They do a tribute to Marvin Gaye (mentions "What's Going On") and Jackie Wilson (mentions "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher").

I first answered that it was 'what's going on' but I stand corrected, I looked it up for you. The song title is "Night Shift" by the Commodores.
