I have already sent it in to be fixed once, and I can't send it in to be fixed again because the Disc Tray fell off when I had to force it open to get a game stuck inside the console back out.. (ok, yeah I admit at the time it was pretty dumb) but before about a year ago it worked fine...

If it's the first version of the PS2 and not the minaturized one, then the disc read error is actually a common problem. My PS2 had the exact same problem. Basically, there's a plastic gear inside the playstation that controls the angle of the disc reading laser. It just needs to be readjusted. The source website provides detailed instructions on how to fix it. It involves taking your Playstation 2 apart and opening it up so make sure you read the entire thing before doing it.

Your disk might be dirty. Give it a good blow and wipe with your t-shirt, or use a wet washcloth and a towel. If your disk isn't dirty, well, sony's repair shops are losing their touch!
