The medusa stage of the jelly fish is the stage that you see swimming passively in the ocean. They are the ones that can cause a sting.. they look a little like a lamp shade with frilly cords hanging down. This is actually the central body and many tentacles which trail behind it, this allows them to catch fish and other small sea creatures as they float by.
The mythical creature Medusa was a snake like woman who had snakes for hair, the many snakes coming off of her head resemble the meny tentacles that trail behind a jellyfish.

The mythical Medusa had snakes for hair. The medusa type of jellyfish (see ref.) has tentacles that radiate or descend from a central body. There is a strong apparent resemblance.
