They spend at least some of their lives half-buried in mud or hiding among bottom vegetation or dead matter. Eyes on stalks allow them to see without giving themselves away.

Being marine animals, they spend much of their time submerged. However, their main place of occupancy is in the intertidal region where the water level fluctuats and is on average not very deep. Pelagic birds, such as seagulls are a primary predator of these animals. The crabs and other crustaceans are at an advantage with their eyes on stalks. They are able to keep cover under the surface of the water and still look out for predators as well as food.

The eyes on stalks are an adaptive trait which provides them with better vision. They function like a periscope.
