What is it that you want? A camphone to take pics and maybe be able to play music and color screens and screen saver and text messages No roming charges with 400 minutes a month with roll over minutes? I had that and ended up only using about 10 to 20 minutes a month. Never used the pictures or text and I even had the patch cord to hook it to my computer and could log on the internet. Never used it either. I was useing about 2 dollars of minutes a month and paying 54 dollars a month for it. I was stuck in a 2 year contract so I end up paying 0ver 1200 bucks plus abut 400 bucks for the phone. Oh the battery died after abut a year and cost 50 bucks to replace. So about 850 bucks a year to use under 250 minutes a year. I had almost 4000 minutes in roll over.
So here is what I did.
I went to Wally world and got a Net 10 phone. Cost me 50 bucks for the phone and 300 startup minutes which last for 2 months. At the ned of the two months I had only used something like 40 minutes. So I bought a one year card for 150 dollars which added 1500 minutes so right now I have over 1700 minutes and no payments till June 20th of next year when I will get a bran new phone and a new 1 year card or just buy a new one year card.
So if all you want is to talk and send text messages Net 10 will be the pick. 200 bucks and you are good for a year with 1800 minutes. You can add more minutes anytime you like.
So I saved 600 bucks a year I am very happy and will still have I bet 1000 minutes left over at the end of my year.
Most cell phone Co's will charge you about 900 bucks to turn off your contract so watch out. Second best phone to me would be a Cricket.

I presume you want a GSM phone & you are not strangled for money.
Motorola V3i for 11200/- is a very good deal.
Nokia N91 & N80 are brilliant phones but are quite bulky.
Samsung SGH-X820 is just awesome. It packs in all the features in a mere 6.9mm. & it is still very easy to hold & use. It is priced at Rs.15800/-.
Nokia 3230 is very good buy for Rs. 9600/-
If you want a cheaper phone then Samsung SGH-C130 is a good bet.
