yeah I'm black and I'm expected to like rap and r&b but you know what, I don't like that kind of music at all...I guess it's assuming if you're a certain race or culture you're suppose to like all the aspects and "traditions" behind it like music, food, clothes, etc. My parents were the same way, they figured when I became a teenager I'd be just like my older brothers and sisters and listen to rap and r&b music however I didn't take a liking for it (I like pop.)...but yeah, I definitely agree that society can be so stereotypical in assuming that just because you're a certain race you're suppose to live a certain way...

Music is always a choice. I knew a cowboy type that was into opera. Perhaps you just can't abide Ricky Martin. That's OK. The store is filled with all kinds of misc. You'll find something.

Your father does have a point. If you are black, your style of music is r&b, some jazz, and blues. If you are white, your style is country, rock, and pop. If you are any other race, your style is m.o.r., folk, and barbershop. Anything other than that is not within the western music culture.

I'm as American as baseball and apple pie, but I love Latin Rock. I can't stand the newer country (the stuff about the singer leaving his wife for his truck and crap), and rap is crap. I also enjoy jazz, blues, classical and rock (but not the heavy metal screamer stuff). I just think that you should listen to what speaks to you and you like. Ethnicity has nothing to do with it.

I think alot of people feel that way that you "should" listen to a certain kind of music. But that is pretty old fashioned way of thinking. I think you should do what makes YOu happy.

everyone is entitled to like or dislike whatever they want. i am scottish, does that mean i am to like scottish music, or country dancing? i like some, but not all. just because u r a certain nationality doesn't mean u have to like everything about your country!

I like everything but country. I just can't stand that crappy music. And that heavy metal too. Disguisting.

You as an individual don't even have to like what your parents like. My three children like different things than I do and I have always encouraged them to find their own like and dislikes. I never discourage them from trying something that I don't care for. To each his own likes and dislikes.
