Put up thick curtains or anything you have on all the windows on the east side of the house. Keep them closed and the windows shut as well all day, till the sun passes over to the west side. Open windows on the west side of the house.

If you can afford a fan, put one in the attic so it draws the hot air out a window up there. Stay in the basement where it is cooler. Make a living area there out of whatever you have. Rescue old fans from the curb! They often work, or if you literally rinse the dust out of them with a hose and let them dry in the sun for a day, they often work better.

Don't cook hot food on the stove top or with a range- eat a lot of yummy cold food!

If your driveway is near the house, hose it down on hot days! Driveways collect a LOT of heat. While you're at it, hose yourself down. You can also sit in a cold tub of water.

Good luck!

Ow! I've lived without AC before, and it's not much fun.

You might want to get a portable AC. But if that's out of the picture...

If you have Venitian blinds, turn them so the curved side faces out. That way the light and incidental heat will be reflected out.

Open a couple of windows and use fans.

Fill several plastic bottled with water (not all the way up, though), freeze them, and sit them in front of the fans. That makes for a great make-shift AC!

Take cool showers and drink lots of water. In fact, you might want to go so far as to keep a tub of cool water for taking a dip in now and then.

Soak several hand towels and freeze them, and wear them around your head and neck. That will help you to personally stay cool.

I've never tried using dry ice, so I won't offer an opinion of that.

Good luck!

What we do is close curtains throughout the house that are in the sun and open all the windows if there is a breeze. If you have a basement, keep the door open during the day, aside from that , all I can suggest are ceiling fans and try to avoid heating up the kitchen by cooking meals early in the am and re-heating later or living on the barbeque.

Insulate your home better. At night when it is cooler make sure you open the windows and exhaust the warm air using a fan in reverse or put it in backwards. Than in the morning close the windows. Pull all shades and keep the doors to the out side closed as much as possible. Make sure you take the fan out of the window. Use it to make you feel cool. Drink plenty of water. Please don't mist the house with water it Will make you feel even warmer. If you have a dehumidifier use it to help feel cooler.

Make sure you keep all the windows open at night to let in the cooler air. Try to have windows that are opposite each other open to draw cross ventilation into the house/ room. Keep the drapes drawn during the day to keep the sun from heating up the cooler air that came in during the night.

Much depends upon the type of house you have. A whole house fan is a reasonably inexpensive way to help cool your home.

Another way is to install ceiling fans in the rooms you desire some cooling. We even have these with our air-conditioning.

Long term, plant trees around your home. They do have a cooling effect in a micro-climate sort of way.

When I was younger, and had no air conditioning, I would buy a dishwashing bin, and buy a block of ice, and put it in front of a box fan...You would be surprized how much this cools you off... Try a small towel wet with cold water around your neck...And keep your feet in a bucket of tepid water...I hope I have helped your needs...

My grandparents (many years ago) used to hang a wet sheet in an open doorway to outside or in open windows. You need a little breeze though. The evaporation effect cools off the area.

find a way to take a pre existing invention which is those new things for cars that keep it cool by the energy they get from the sun and apply that technology to your house, sorry it was the best I could do and if I had the money for a patent and to make this invention of mine work I would do it myself, and probably make tons of money to boot. too bad I am a stoner

Take a cold wet towel (after you wring it out) and place it over the grill of a floor or table top fan. Turn on fan and it will give cool air.
