Sounds like you need some professional help. The floors probably need to be sanded, bleached (professional stuff), stained to a color you choose (or left natural) and then sealed with polyurethane (several coats).

First of all, my friend......... don't pay attention to any of the bozos answers listed before mine cause they don't know what they're talking about. As far as wood floors go, the first thing is that you should NEVER mop them. They only get swept. Now, regarding your ground-in dirt. I would suggest you put a little turpentine on a rag and rub the floor a little in an inconspicuous area. The reason for this is, depending on the finish on your floors, turpentine will either remove just the dirt OR the dirt and the finish. Sanding is not the answer unless you're interested in restaining and refinishing the floors. What you have is just a build-up of grime. Turpentine will remove it easily. After you're done, NEVER wax or polish your floors. Those things put a film down which accumulate dirt, etc.

You can try refinishing it- by a ball of wax stripper and clean the floors with that- then rewax and buff it. Go to Rona- or Home Depot. They have the items there..

They didn't do a good job if its been refnished.. If it's still black...the old wax- wasn't removed-just recoated that's why the dirt is embedded in there

Our house was also built in 1919. We just refinished the wood floor in our bedroom and it looks fabulous. I would recommend it.
