Pop music has a more general appeal to teenagers and adults and is a bland watered-down version of rock 'n 'roll with more rhythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love.

I know that Rock, Pop, and even R@B get lumped together, but they are very differant.
In Pop, usually the music all sounds about the same, and many times the Singer is mostly there for eye candy. Someone else writes the lyrics and the music for them. Sometimes they are a little talented, but once again, they conform to the mainstream music business.
With Rock, the artist usually writes their own material, there is a lot of differance in sounds from band to band, there is more talent, and they don't conform to mainstream society or the music business. For example, take System of a Down, or Slipknot. Bands like this don't care if they make people mad or piss someone off. They do what they want, do their own material, and if people don't like it, they don't care.
The biggest test is this. Do you see the artist on the front page of a tabloid? If you do, they are Pop. If not, they are Rock.

There's a HUGE difference! Rock originated from rhythm and blues music and first appeared in the early 1950's. Pop is just meant to be upbeat and lively. You probably listen to mainstream music if you don't know the difference, because rock is total crap these days. If you've never heard anything by classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, and Def Leppard, I seriously suggest you look them up. And you should look up older pop artists like Crosby Stills Nash Young and the Mommas and the Poppas too. the difference was so much more distinguished back then.

Pop (popular) music is the music of the moment. It is designed to appeal to a large range of people and to be mostly societally friendly. You'll rarely hears words blanked out in pop music.

Rock music (and some rock music also wavers into pop) is about rebellion and going against soceital norms - as such you normally wouldn't want your eight year old emulating a rock star as they might a pop icon.

Simply put, Pop music is a genre that can be enjoyed by a wide group of people of all ages. Rock music is generally enjoyed by a much narrower group of people (mostly younger). Actually Rock and all it's various derivatives grew out of a combination of pop, rythmn and blues, country and jazz.

in the 80's bands like Metallica, Red Hot chili peppers (and then 90s green day ) etc were some variation of Rock music,
now they are pop, b/c most of thier members are in their mid 40's.

pop is more poppy and rock i more rocky. Just joking! I listen to pop and rock alot! I allways pictured teenage boys listening to rock really loud in there bedrooms, and there sister telling him to turn it down because she is listening to pop music.

pop sucks coz it's mediocre and shallow...while rock is music and requires a certain amount of virtuosity and feel...(some exceptions are there)

but more factually, all these gernes were segregated mainly based on the beats per minute...
