There is real Macedonia(Greek Macedonia or Macedon) which is in Greece and there is Slavic-Macedonia which is a state that emerged from Yugoslavia. (The Slavic state is actually called Makedonija but it uses as international name the Greek name Macedonia and causes confusion with real Macedonia of Greece).
The ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon or Macedonia (the birth place of Alexander the Great) was in the northern-most part of ancient Greece, bordering the kingdom of Epirus on the west and the region of Thrace to the east and it still is entirely in Greece!( Entire north Greece is the province of Macedonia).
Alexander the Great (from Greek Macedonia) build a gigantic Greek empire that expanded from Greece all the way to India!
The sad think is that there are few fanatics from Slavic-Macedonia that believe that they are linked with Greek Macedonia and Alexander the Great and they cause problems among the two states!
I have to mention though that the Slavic-Macedonia government had tried in several occasions to isolate those fanatics and has clearly stated that they only use the same name with Greek Macedonia. They have also stated that they have no relation with real Macedonia of Greece and of course no relation with Alexander the Great!

There are actually two Macedonias. One is an independent country which was part of Yugoslavia, and is located between Serbia and Greece.
The other Macedonia is a region of northern Greece. In ancient times it was an independent kingdom, and its most famous ruler was of course Alexander, who conquered all of Greece as well as most of the Middle East and Egypt.

Actually, Yugoslavia no longer exists. It separated quite a while back.
However, throughout the extensive history of Macedonia, it has been independent, part of Greece, part of Thrace, part of Rome,... a Slavic domain, part of Bulgaria, part of Albania, part of Yugoslavia, and finally gained independence once again on September 8, 1991.
The country is located north of Greece, south of Serbia, east of Albania, and west of Bulgaria. The small region of Bulgaria called Macedon is located on Bulgaria's border with Macedonia the country. The region of Greece called Macedonia is also located on the border with the country Macedonia; however, this region of Greece is quite large in size.
