Each of the characters represent the feelings of the American people at the onset of ww2. The one guy wants to go fight, as a skier, one wants to stay away and one isn't sure. The death of the one boy may represent Pearl Harbor. This helps influence the others. All this is from memory, may not be accurate. I hope I have helped.
