I have islamic associates and they're very polite and condemn terrorism. Please give them a break. Extremism is nothing new. Look at the crusades

It's just how people perceive situations really. Some people tend to follow and agrees with the view of others. While others, like to believe what media says or reported ( or simply they are too lazy to research on that issue temselves?). Some have bad experience with the religion. And there are those that do not really understand Islam so just take what they hear. Im an islam. I condone the acts of terrorists in Iraq but i will definitely not applaud the acts of media , like the cartoon extravangaze, against islam either. It's simple really. Be open-minded, not discriminating , and only believe what you see or know ( its call maturity) or be narrow-minded, prejudice against an issue without valid reason and also act immaturely. S imple formula to a simple equation =D

I would blame that on media exposure at this point. True, if you go back several hundred years, you would see that the Catholic church has a really nasty track records. Witch-hunts, the Inquisition, the Crusades, excommunication for no reasons, extortion, you name it.

But did you not know that during the Moorish occupation of Spain, and before and between the Crusades, Muslims, Jews and Catholics lived in peace in both occupied Spain and Jerusalem? They were getting along mighty fine. That is until Charlemagned retook a good chunk of Spain and the first crusade happened. But after those flareups, especially in what is now Israel and Palestine, the same degree of peace was achieved, except that different people had to pay extra taxes. if it was done once, why can it not be done again?

However, there is very little that is done by Catholics/Christians these days that makes the news in that manner. Muslim extremists right now have the center stage because of the recent attacks and the invasion of Iraq. I am a soldier, and I am serving with a Muslim fellow, and he's a good man, good father, great soldier. Just as one of my closest friend is Muslim. As were most people I met when I was in the Middle-East welcomed us Canadians with open arms and were quite frienly, taking into account that we were Westerners.

And, as well as media exposure, it's also basic psychology and politics. To get the public eye away from the White House (in particular), polarizing a population towards some "enemy" is a good way to do it. Also, all that "picking on Muslims because they are terrorists" are giving the people something to fear, and as with every fear, people try to understand it. And when you can control the flow of information about one fear, you have the public under some sort of control.

Blame the media. If you are watching a news program, listening to the radio and the words terrorism & Muslim are mentioned close enough together, then yes there are people that will put 2 +2 together and get 5, the association is made, and people become more biased and sensitized to these words.
IT'S WRONG.
Take for instance the Bradford riots(in UK July 7th 2001) that occurred. 5 years on, the media are still Inflaming the situation by digging up more facts, creating more documentaries/films etc, most by the title "Bradford Riots". Couldn't they have titled them differently, "Bradford moves forward" or "Communities-the vital link"?
I don't think enough work is done to show the positive work that is done, to help the populace realize how important it is.
Then we have the do-gooders that bend over backwards to help "minorities" (sorry I had to use that!), at the exclusion of others, and then wonder why tensions grow!
Be fair, YES, help people out, YES, but think carefully of your actions, they may be misinterpreted!
I have been in the situation of been told "you'll burn in hell", by a Christian when I told him I didn't want a raffle ticket, and didn't like being preached to.
It's a strange mad world and we ALL need to respect each others beliefs, not constantly try to convert people to our way of thinking.

Muslims/Christians/Jews & the Many, Many other beliefs that are Just as Important (to their believers), have a need to base their lives on something firm/constant/unmoving, but in the years that come it's vital that we all change, become more understanding, more tolerant and find room in our busy lives to welcome those that we find different, to open our hearts & minds and see how similar we are, and be proud of it.
Kindest Regards to one and all, Dave.

Yes they are all that bad. Why? Because they all support the ones doing the dirty work. When 9/11 happened I saw them cheering in the streets. I have muslim "friends" and in private they cheered too. Black muslims in the USA call white people devils. I dont know of a single muslim person that does not wish for the destruction of Israel. Islamists are attacking others (and even themselves) all over the world. They are a menace.

You speak of the crusades that happened thousands of years ago? I speak of whats happening now. And remember that during the crusades muslims were there too, killing Christians. Muhammed was in fact a war lord, not a man of peace. Muhammed married a 6 year old girl when he was already an elderly man.

Please look at your question again.I know you don't mean it but it seems to imply that most of them are.I think it's disgraceful the way Muslims are portrayed in the media. If, say, some Spaniards were involved in acts of terror, you wouldn't call them Catholic terrorists,so why blame all Muslims for what a few of them do?Any-way,one man's terrorist,is another man's freedom fighter.Maybe these people feel they have been oppressed and exploited long eneough by the West, and are striking back.I don't agree with their methods, blowing up innocent people, they should focus their attacks on the governments who have trampled on them.

I don't know any Muslims personally, so the only access i get is from the media, which tends to be the extremists (terrorists), if the media would show a lot of muslims preaching anti terrorism maybe other people would be more tolerant.

Who is society?? I'm not aware of any group who is "picking" on Muslims. I suspect there are some people doing that but I don't know any. I am aware of many Muslims and groups (notably Iran's leaders) who want Jews wiped from the Earth.

I am aware of some terrorists who call themselves Muslims and they are giving Islam a bad name. I'm not aware of anyone who is proud of the crusades that happened hundreds of years ago long long before any of us were born.

what society picking on muslims? In the UK?

there have been problems in certain areas but I didn't realise that society in general has a problem.

aren't the problems are being amplified by the press?

I haven't seen any racial problems in a long time, maybe I'm not hanging out in the right places to see all this racism.

I agree with you on that one. It really does seem that Muslims are getting a bum deal in the media and the press, (and on here I may add!)
I have known and loved many Muslims over the years and even the ones that are very devout are nice.
I think it is cycle though because it wasn't that long back in history that it was the Jew that were getting the bum deal.... I wonder who will be next???

It will always be the way, not just with Muslims but with all religions, beliefs, followings. Like others have said there are good & bad in all people & the bad will always attract more attention than the good as it makes better headlines!
