Aren't we as parents and members of society responsible for teaching our children right and wrong? Doesn't that include lieing? But, yet the majority of people every year delight in lieing to their kids and even get mad if someone else tells them the truth. Of course I am talking about--what else! Santa Clause. So my question is: Why do you feel the need to fill your childrens head up with crap when it would be just as easy to sit them down and tell them the truth?

I don't think that God is the lie. Of course, I gave you my opinion and you are very welcome to give me yours. Just to let you know where I stand.

Sam, there is more than one way to make your children happy. I have two children and have NEVER told them that santa was real from the get go. We have wonderful christmases.

No, my children are very luck that they have a mother who is as honest and open with them as I am. They may not believe in santa but they will know for their entire lives, that even when the world lies to them, that I will never lie! They know that they have someone that they can trust in me. That means being honest about EVERYTHING!

Good point, Nikki. My children are welcome to their imaginations. Their imaginations are very active and I encourage it. But, while my son loves to play super heros, he also knows that they are not real. So he does not get confused and try to fly off the roof. Get it? Same with santa. He knows that it is ok to pretend, but he also knows that santa is not a real character and at the end of the day, mommy and daddy buy the toys. He is only five.

I agree! Santa is a control tool. "Be good when I'm not watching, because Santa is watching." Better to come clean with the truth. Say: "Be good when I'm not watching, because, even when I can't see you there are consequences to your actions."

I think parents mean no harm by telling their children about Santa Clause. I don't tell my children that there is a Santa Clause but parents that do, just want to add some excitement and enjoyable memories for the children like hanging their stockings, baking Christmas cookies for Santa, waking up and opening presents, the family gathering to feast and sing Christmas songs. Also, some parents use it as a form of discipline by telling their children if they are naughty and not nice, Santa won't give them toys. I may not believe in Santa Clause but I do believe in making children happy and parents making the effort to make them happy.

Well dear Santa is a marketing tool to sale toys, but if youare 45yrs old are older when you parents where young Santa Clause Was this jolly fat man in re suiet that brought you gifes and toys.
Now the story is pretty much the same except that greed has taken the place of need.
Tell you child the truth it won't kill them but one thing there was a long long long time ago a man call Saint Nicleous.

Okay....that is a good question. Here is our stance on that. We, in our house, believe in Santa Claus. Or The spirit of Christmas. we like the story of St. Nicholas. And in our culture, in our house, He is very real. I'm almost 40. I still have fun with him. How sad it must be to wear your shoes, and not believe and be a scrooge. Ba-humbug to you mean ol' grown up. If you haven't gotten a lump of coal yet...you should.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

ur point is correct but small children actually find pleasures in such lies. if this is considered as s lie then we r perhaps telling a hundred lies everyday. the whole lot of stories that we tell our children ,most of them r imaginary, they do not exist. is that considered as lie? the smile on there faces when we tell them stories , isnt it gud? doesnt that give pleasure to us as well as them.
santa clause may b a lie but the motive behind it is to teach them. they'll know the diff between real and imaginary when they grow up.
i think it is not considered as a lie..

Please explain to me how Santa Claus and the rest of the group (Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc.) has harmed a child. I believed in all of them and don't remember being severely traumatized by learning the horrible truth. Childhood is a time of fantasy and fairy tales.

If you feel the need to tell your children there is no Santa Claus, etc., please feel free to go right ahead. Personally, I think you'll be depriving them of some of the fun of childhood.

Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the toothfairy are myths. It is not harmful to let a child believe in myth. My parents never told me they weren't true.. I grew up and sorted out for myself what was myth and what was reality. Myths are there to teach children. If you let a child figure out the myth themselves rather than pulling out the rug under them when their brains aren't ready for it by saying it's not true then children will have no trouble figuring out for themselves what is real and what is not.

Yeah, well none of that compares the the biggest lie people tell their children - that god exists and that the religion of your choice is the only way to interact with this mythical higher power.
