Oliver Stone recently observed this trend in an interview.

Compare for example 'Gladiator' versus 'Troy' or 'Alexander.' Why on a popular level do we now identify with the Romans, but are somehow alienated from the Greeks?

NB Films about ancient Rome would include films about the life of Christ or set during Christ's lifetime, such as 'Ben Hur.'

If you disagree let me know!

If this trend is true, it is a big change from the previous 500 years, where the focus on ancient Greece was arguably dominant, most obvious from the Renaissance through to the neo-classicism of the 18th century.

Stone, btw, suggested that we identify America now with the Roman Empire, whereas we identify the British Empire with the Greeks.

Teaching of history tends to focus on the more visibly impressive accomplishments of the Roman empire so we are more familiar with the Roman empire than the Greeks. Also, the Romans were more spectacularly violent than the Greeks and you know how Hollywood likes to glorify violence. As well, certainly throughout Europe and the Middle East, the Roman empires influence and legacy is more palpable, again engendering the familiarity factor.

The culture of ancient Rome is viewed as more perverse and pious than ancient Greece. Furthermore, the romans are pictured more as blue eyed blonds, while the greeks a pictured more as darker skinned, with black hair. Yes, appearance is everything for a lot of people.

I don't think it has anything to do with 'Rome--Greece'. The story line and the characters make the film. Some films are just done poorly. Often the director gets too far away from the story in trying to make a film more popular. They can take a very good story and destroy it with Hollywood.
