This is a defense mechanism you have developed over the years, to avoid dealing with emotional situations in a more appropriate way. I think a little counselling could help you understand this and learn to control it. I'm sure you have thought of that yourself, as you are obviously quite intelligent. Since this bothers you, you shouldn't hesitate to look for professional help. If it was a toothache, you'd go the dentist, wouldn't you? No difference. Good luck.

It sounds like you smile when you are happy AND when you feel insecure or unsure how to respond to a situation. Perhaps you should look into some assertiveness training or a psychologist who can offer better insight into why you have such a problem. Also, work on reminding yourself to take a deep breath and relax whenever you feel that smiling sensation coming on. Try looking away from the person to re-establish that muscle control, and give your emotions a mini-break from the feeling of being "on stage" to allow you to relax and be in control of your own reactions.

If nothing else, at least your reaction is a smile (something pleasent) and not something crazy! Good Luck to you.

Sorry for the 3-2 line answer.
Inappropriate laughter is recognized as a symptom of inbalance in Chinese Medicine. It relates to the Heart Spirit I would imagine. Try acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine. It could even help with your depression. Good luck and take care.
