I'm an author. Smoldering is good! It is right. As a noun, it means 1) thick smoke from a slow buring fire, or 2) a smokey fire from a slow buring fire. I like the way you used it with wreckage. Sounds Great! But, the spelling does not have a "u" in it. It is SMOLDERING. The ceased-fire should not have a "d"...take it out. It shoud be cease-fire. Sounds like your story is going to be great. Hint...if you are creating in Word, use your Tools Icon. Spelling & Grammar, also Thesaurus will help alot! I find lots of different ways to say the same thing over again...it's cool! Hope this is helpful.

Let me go backward. Change the sentence to something like, "a cease fire had been declared...." There is no ceased fire.
As for smoldering wreckage: wreckage would be your noun and smoldering is descriptive of the wreckage. Doesn't that sound more like it?
Good luck sweetie. Wish you would have told us the name of your story, so I could read it!
I'm excited, I'm getting my first real big article published for Easy Rider. I am grateful. It's hard work out there!!! LOL. Good luck. Nana
