Bryophytes! Bryophytes are called the "amphibians of plant kingdom", as they have the ability of living in the water and on the land! Bryophytes are the oldest land plants on earth, and have been around for 400 million years or more. Although small, they can be very conspicuous growing as extensive mats in woodland, as cushions on walls, rocks and tree trunks, and as pioneer colonists of disturbed habitats. Previously bryophytes have lived only in the water; however, after some evolution, they adapted to live on the land! Find below some of the adaptations in bryophytes to adapt land habitat: (1) Multicellular plant body and conservation of water: A compact multicellular plant body was formed which helped in the conservation of water by reducing cell surface are exposed to dry land conditions. (2) Absorption of CO2: Modification of photosynthetic tissues for the absorption of carbon dioxide without losing much water and exposure to light. (3) Absorption of water: Special structures such as rhizoids were developed for absorption of water and anchorage. (4) Heterogamy: Heterogamy was evolved, forming non-motile egg containing stored food and motile sperms. (5) Protection of gametes: Gametes were produced and protected by the special multicellular organs. (6) Embryo formation: Multicellular embryo was formed which was retained inside the female reproductive body during its development. (7) Alternation of generation: Alternation of spore producing generation (sporophyte) with gamete producing generation (gametophyte) enables the plant to produce and test the best genetic combinations for adapting to the versatile (multipurpose) terrestrial conditions.
