Do your water tests - I would check pH and hardness too. But if both fish and plants are losing color i would look at the lighting too. Most aquatic plants need higher light than the lights sold with aquariums, along with some other care the pet stores generally don't tell you, or know even, and generally people go through a cycle of constantly replacing them until they give up and get plastic. Fish color is also a reflection of the lighting - you notice fish look paler when the lights are out and color up when the lights are on.

Probably nitrates in the water. Start with daily 10% water changes. You need to run water tests to make sure your ph and amonia levels are right and make sure you use a good water conditioner. You can get the kits at any pet store.

Do acouple water changes. Your tank is probaly going through an ammoinia spike.

lighting, or lack there -of.the plants will need grow lights in ordeer to prosper in your tank.a wide light spectrum is also benificial for your fish to maintain a brighter color.

You need to check your water parameters and do frequent water changes if ammonia or nitrates are present.
