I live in Japan currently and I have to be honest it is even worse over here! Being an American here we are naturally a bit bigger and more curved (I'm 5'8 and 150.. too curved maybe) and living around all these Japanese women it is horrible! They're tiny.. it's unimaginable. You really just have to ignore it and go with what you think looks good. I mean I'm most certainly not small, and a lot of people aren't I think in general everyone is pretty centered on looks but they shouldn't be all that matters. Keeping up with a good health, and taking care of yourself (mentally, emotionally, physically..) is what really matters.

I'd guess they're rather important wherever you go. The first thing you see about a person is how they look.
Now if you get to know a person over the internet with no photo, then looks might not be as important.
Generally the longer you know people, the better they look if you like them and the worse they look if you don't like them.

Because there is a huge beauty-cosmetic-surgery and fashion industry eager to sell. Looks are important to department stores, sun glasses makers, signature clothes and shoes. All they want you is to feel so ugly and inappropriate as to spend all your money trying to look as Gisele Bunchen.

The reality has nothing to do with what these people ''sell' on TV and billboards, we (the majority of Americans) are not skinny, we use no make up and wear jeans and t-shirts. We are not so stupid (Yet) as to live for looks.
