I prefer Sydney over Melbourne. There is a lot to do in Sydney and if you want to travel, the beaches and mountains are close. I was impressed because I went to a movie that got out around 9:00 or later and stores were still open! There are also a lot of parks you can go to, the people are friendly and you will never run out of things to do.

Melbourne was nice too because they had these cool cable car type things to ride on. But they stopped running around 8:00 or so. There was also a beach close by and it seemed as though it was slower paced than Sydney.

I spent 2 months in Australia last winter. Both Melbourne and Sydney are great cities and it's hard to choose. Great weather, friendly people in both. Sydney seemed a little more expensive, but more international. I liked it better because there seemed to be much more in the way of things to do, see, clubs; the beaches are great and easy to get to.

I'd like to be back at either place, or Cairns (the reef is amazing).
Enjoy your stay! Good luck!

I have lived in both cities, and Melbourne has definetly a lot more to offer. Melbourne is known as the Sporting, Dining and entertaining, shopping, theatre capital of Australia. If you want to see a sporting event, you are within walking distance of the venues. In the city there are approximately 800 restaurants. The Aquarium in Melbourne holds two million gallons of water, while Sydneys only has one million gallons, which means there are more fish to see in the tanks. Also the Melbourne aquarium has a giant squid which is frozen in three tonnes of ice.

Sydney can be good if you like hanging out with yuppies and eating highly priced garbage. Melbourne can be similar in some ways, but has far more intelligent people if you ask me. Sydneys like a one stop shop, and thats the sydney opera house. If your young the city can be pretty lively at night though.

the two cities have individual charm. MELBOURNE: Italian and Greek eating places and low homes paintings Galleries issues to do on the river Melbourne Hills great for farmers' markets, berries, eating places, perspectives. Surf no longer good till you commute previous Geelong etc. SYDNEY The harbour and all that is factors of interest Surf (yet no longer as good as Newcastle) :) Royal national Park

Sydney is always thought of as better, I suppose because it is bigger and busier. BUT is is official... Melbourne has been selected as the best city in Australia. and it must be true because I read it in the Herald Sun newspaper!
