It could be many things. If you can't notice anything strange while driving it, take it somewhere to get the engine light code pulled. Places like Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts will do it for free.

It could mean that you have an ignition problem. Possibly a catalytic converter problem. Take it to Meineke they can read the error code. Doesn't cost much.

Engine is overheating, or the radiator reservoir is low of coolant.

You need to change the oil and put coolant in the radiator.

if the light comes on, then something is wrong - even if you can't see it visibly with the untrained eye... get it checked out by a mechanic...
The light comes on for a reason - NOT just to look pretty.
