You MUST keep your CD drive and Game CDs perfectly clean. One spec of dust can make your game STOP DEAD.

I would suggest first that you clean your CD drive with one of those lens cleaners, it is possible that it is not operating at full capacity because of dust.
Laptops use components that are quite expensive because they use very low power, that is why they have less memory, slower drives, and fewer of the really "cool" things... like multiple drives. You may find a new drive and then later find out that it uses so much power that your battery goes dead after an hour of play... even while plugged in!
The problem is finding a CD drive that will fit... AND that will run on low power.
If you are determined to replace it, and you are not a techie type... then shop around to see how much it will cost... just take your laptop to a few places where they do repairs, like Best Buy, or other local computer shops... don't automatically assume that your local shops are going to be more expensive than the big chains... as long as no repairs are involved, some of them do upgrades pretty cheaply.

it is possible to change the cd-rom drive, but that would probably not solve your problem. The reason your computer is freezing up is most likely due to the amount of RAM memory that it has. Most games also require video cards that are more robust than the typical ones. With the cost of upgrading your laptop to cover all of the bases, it would probably be more cost effective to get a new computer. Upgrading laptops is generally something that needs to be done by a technician, unlike a desktop model that can be upgraded if you have more than basic computer skills. If you don't need a laptop for travel, you will get much more computer for the money with a desktop system.

It has nothing to do with the CD-drive, my guess is you don't have a graphics card that can play the Sims 2 well, it's either that or the processor is too slow or you don't have enough memory, I'd recommend at least 1GB of memory and a dedicated graphics card. But, it has nothing to do with the optical drive.
As I said my best guess is that you will need a better graphics card, this cannot be upgraded on a laptop so you'll have to get a new laptop if you really want to play the Sims 2 on it.
Okay, everyone, it has nothing to do with the optical drive, nothing at all and I don't know why you all keep saying it because it is totally irrelevant to what the real problem is.

Its possible
but if you are not able to play games it may be some other reasons. So donot blame it on rio
the cdrom bench mark / speed test/ data tranfer test can be carried out on the system before concluding that cdrom requires change.
So hold ur horses for purchasing a new drive.
All the best

Yes- usually. It depends on how new it is. The newer-the better your chances of a successful drive change. I would not attempt to do this yourself, take it in to your PC repair man. Don't forget your software for your new drive, they'll need it. It is cheaper than a new PC but if you need a good excuse to buy one...
