The main organs (heart, lungs, kidneys, liver) were removed and put in decorative jars representing the God's that would overlook each organ (I think the name of them is conopic or conopsic jars...close anyway) after they were soaked in herbs and oils and then wrapped. This was ensure the organ's safe transport to the after life. The body cavity was also stuffed with herbs and oil soaked rags. The body was then rubbed down with a special fragrances liniment to keep it from rotting. The family of the deceased would also provide special linens soaked in herbs and oils that the body was then wrapped in...first, each limb and then the entire body. The process would take up to a month before the wrap was complete. It is believed that there is special combination of herbs, spices and oils that are the main contributors of preservation. Also, while the wrapping technique was ritualistic it is believed to contribute to preservation, as well.
I am pretty sure that it is not really a secret anymore. I learned more details than I gave in my art history class, but too lazy to dig up the papers the info is located in. You can get the info from the Internet or your local library. Maybe not a complete recipe, but certainly the basics. They have been known for many years. Your friend is being ominous with no good reason.

occupied05 is correct. Additionally, the VERY HOT and dry air of the area basically 'baked' the bodies. So between the oils and herbs and the baking.....mummies exist.
