I think it would be better to be a supporting or character actor than the big star.
Character actors can work in hundreds of films for their entire career, make good pay and not be hounded by the press or fans.
Nice steady work.

Have you ever seen "ÃThree Amigos!? That movie should sum it up very nicely in two different levels:
A) The actors who play the cowboys in the movie are treated like Kings, but for a price- they must say yes to the producer at all times, if not they have to make it on their own.
B) The real actors weren't too keen to do this numbing/dumbing movie but the monery was good, so I think the story goes that Steve Martin and his SNL buddies improvised much of what we saw in the film (Martin Short is actually seen giggling at another one's joke).
So some actors get "lucky", others "sell their soul", and others yet "give up their lives" for acting only to find that they "still haven't found what they're looking for" and in fact it was "right in front of their eyes" like many of the romantic tean flicks try to preach. Most 'extras' just do it for fun and a bit of easy money, content with the loved one they have at home. The minority use it as a stepping stone to greater things; like Brad Pitt's accidental "find" in Thelma & Louise- they sure sponged all the 'innocent, good ol' boy' charm he had back then!
Hollywood is a business- Fame is it's marketing campaign and inevitable downfall, all in one. They work you to the bone, or until your publicity goes to your head, then they say 'Syonara & good ridance'. Smart actors like Sean Penn, Susan Saradon, George Clooney, etc. do a "Hollywood" just for the funding to an 'alternative/indie film' where they 'perform' much better for near scrums.

Hollywood is a cruel city. many talented actors who have had great beginnings in movies are later dismissed and ignored. Sal Mineo, Elizabeth Hartman, George Chakiris and many others are examples of brilliant actors that were on top and later disappeared into anonymity.

There are movie stars and there are supporting actors ...
It is that easy. For example: "Sunset Boulevard" by Billy Wilder.
Everyone remembers Gloria Swanson, Erich Von Stroheim and
of course William Holden ... these are STARS and they are
very good. But who remembers that young ( Swedish ? ) girl,
who fell in love with the hero ?!? I hardly can
remember her face and her voice ... the name?!?
