It is illegal, just as using someone's gas, water or electricity is illegal. You are effectively stealing their bandwidth.

The correct thing to do would be to find the owner and perhaps offer to share some of the cost of his internet provision in return for a little bit of network security knowledge which he obviously needs. I suppose you need not mention that you had been using it for so long.

Recently We have had problems with our Internet service going down. I often work out of my home... When it goes down, I grab my laptop/ cell phone and jump in my car and drive around the neighborhood until I find a hot spot... There will be 3 or 4 of us sitting at the end of a driveway sometimes...

I have gone as far as purchasing a wireless hub for one of my neighbors... He uses a different provider... we can pick up each others networks right from our own homes!

If I were you, I'd just cough up for my own internet ISP connection. I have a wireless router but we've made sure to password protect it so no-one can piggy-back on our network. Personally I couldn't do what you are doing - I don't like the idea of saving at others expense!

People who have a wireless router have the option to set a password for access. If they choose not to put in a password then I say use it all you want.

I don't see anything wrong with you using their wireless network.

The fact that they left it wide open for others to be able to access, says that they probably don't mind.

And if they do mind, then they need to configure their wireless network to use the security features (ie. encryption) to lock it down and keep others out.

That's not nice but it's pretty stupid on their part not using encryption. You starting to feel guilty about using it without their knowledge? You don't thank that's stealing? What would you think if somebody was stealing something of yours? I'd say either stop it or confess and offer to pay something.

I have a wireless network, I would hate to think that someone was using it. How do you do it, are you hacking? Please tell me so I can check to see if someone is using mine. Otherwise, Its quite naughty of you, I plead you to stop! It will clear you conscience.
