I fell in love with my husband and I married him 1 month ago. Soon after that he asked me to sign sponsorship papers for him so that he could stay in Canada and we could live together and be happy. I loved him very much and could not stand the thought of him getting deported and us being separated, so I agreed to sign the papers. I knew him for about a year before we got married and i knew that he was a refugee and did stand the chance of getting deported back to India. I didn't realize how bad his case was going, he never really talked much about it and I didn't have any reason not to believe him. After we got married we didn't move in together. He lived in a small basement with his sister and he told me we would get our own place at the beginning of August. It turns out that he was ordered to leave the country and that he was just using me for papers. Now he is missing and I've got the border services agency trying to contact me. Am I going to get in trouble? Now what do I do? HELP!!

Well, you knew him for 1 year, so its not so bad for you. I am sure you have pictures over that period showing you were a couple (at least in your mind) and maintain, you had no idea he was using you for immigration purposes alone. That was never discussed!!!

And still maintain, you do not believe so, and you feel your marriage was legal, you were activity looking to move-in together (because it looks real bad that you all were living separate and apart).

Visit a lawyer (immigration/family) for better advise in your region.

Don't know about Canada but if you loved the guy and believed your marriage was for real (his not moving in with you would belie that) that should be a defense against fraud charges. The truth is always best and I, for one (a guy) would certainly not protect him by trying to mislead the authorities. That might well be criminal conduct.

I don't see how you would get into trouble, you did it b/c you loved the guy. You trusted him. I'd just tell them the truth. You never realized that he was using you and he's the one that will be in trouble. Try not to worry honey. You did it out of the goodness in your heart. He has to deal with what he's done.

I'm sorry that you were conned, the man is a jerk and in my opinion you should go to the authorities and tell them that he has conned you so that he could get his papers and have him deported. He deserves to be treated like he treated you with no respect or honor.
