The practice of female circumcision, or female genital mutilation (FGM) is traditionally carried out on young females across many parts of Africa. It has been "imported" to the US and other points of the African diaspora.

A wonderful organization called Tostan, based in Senegal, is providing women's human rights education and has led to a reduction in this brutal and sometimes life-threatening practice.

Here are some films that deal with FGM:

"Moolaade," an African film produced by the legendary Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembene, won "Best Film Un Certain Regard" at the Cannes Film Festival 2004. Colle Gallo Ardo Sy, a circumcised woman, has managed to help her only daughter escape from the ritual of purification organized every seven years. Now that the next ritual is about to happen, four young girls have fled from the village to escape from excision and are seeking protection (moolaade) from Ardo.

"Sebatu's Initiation," produced and directed by Brima Sheriff, about the rite of FGM in Senegal, pitches the two opposing sides to FGM and leaves the public to judge. It vividly illustrates the harmful effects of FGM.

"Tahara," a 17-minute film by Sara Rashad, is the story of Amina, an Egyptian housewife living in Los Angeles, who must decide if she will follow tradition and circumcise her daughter, Suha, or if she will abandon this age old practice and save Suha from circumcision.

"The Day I Will Never Forget," a gripping feature documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Kim Longinotto, examines the practice of FGM in Kenya and the pioneering African women who are bravely reversing the tradition.

Why would you want to do that to a woman. It's not the same as for a man. They cut the outer lips off the woman also they burn or pierce the clitoris etc all of which can be PAINFUL to women.
