When you solve a mathematical problem with a pen and note book, you write various calculations in the note book. While computer (CPU) does a calculation it use RAM as Note book.
If the RAM size is low the CPU can do small calculations at a time. Bigger RAM allows more and faster calculations. Therefore using more RAM increasing speed.
Increasing RAM is easy. Its available in different values. Just buy and plugg in the designated slots. For a home computer 512 MB RAM is good enough.
Virtual PC or Virtual RAM on Hard Disk helps, however not like adding additional RAM

In a nutshell, RAM is defined as Random Access Memory, which means that any byte or section of the memory can be accessed at any given time, verus say a tape drive which is sequential access memory since it must scroll to arrive at a section of the tape.
RAM functions using transistors. Currently the most common RAM is SDRAM or DDR RAM, DDR Ram is based off of SDRAM, SDRAM stands for Synchronous dynamic random access memory. This RAM uses transistors and capacitors. The capacitors are set to a voltage if they are to be a one, or they are cleared to no voltage if there is to be a 0. Since capacitors leak slowly, SDRAM must read and write every bit very often, which is called refreshing the RAM, this either fills the capacitor back to full, or keeps it at zero.
A good and better explanation is given in the weblink below.

yes u are pretty right..RAM does increase the speed of your PC performance but it does only a little. However your processor responsible for it the most.
U can increase the RAM but u need to know wether it is DDR ram or SD RAM...in simple words if u are using P3 ..it has to be SD ram and if it's new P4 then it has to be DDR.
Buy one and get it fixed...any probs IM me

RAM is used to store the applications that the CPU is currently processing ... it's faster to deal with because it's directly connected to the CPU, and the request delay takes much less time than the hard disk ... so if you get more RAM, it helps you open up more applications in the same time faster .. but it depends on the frequency of the CPU too

RAM means Random Access Memory. When you run a program it transfers from your hard drive to your RAM and this is where it runs from. RAM is really cheap and an easy upgrade that can speed up your system a little.

It can indirectly change the speed of your computer depending on what programs you are running, especially memory-intensive applications like games. It is probably the easiest thing to upgrade on your computer, just make sure that you use the same brand and speed of memory in all the chips for the best result.

its actually a storage for data which is to be used by CPU next after its current job is over. Increasing ram considerably increases performance for heavy processing computers.

A good idea would be to go and get yourself an external hard drive... it'll be supported with usb... you can get some pretty lage amounts of memory space with these... you could always then save a lot of your files onto the external... same goes for a memory stick... or just save all your work to disc!

ram stores things temorarily while you are using them. if you dont have enough, your computer will run slow. you can easily increase your ram.
