It's all about genetics. If your Mom and Dad had straight hair, then you probably will too. Same thing for wavy. Sometimes genes can skip a generation and you will have traits from your grandparents.

curly hair is caused by di-sulfide linkages between cysteine amino acids. more white people have genes that have lower cysteine residue levels than africans, for example.
