Hey, it's an auction! Anybody has a right to bid whatever their maximum is. If you really want to win an auction, you should make your maximum bid reflect the highest amount you would be willing to pay. Then if you are the only bidder, you will get it for the starting bid. If somebody else comes in at the last moment and bids higher than your max, they will pay so much that you will be happy NOT to have won it!

When you are the only bidder, it is a disaster for the seller. And don't bother asking for sympathy: This happens to EVERYBODY who bids the minimum to see if they can get a steal.

When you bid on eBay you are supposed to bid the MAXIMUM amount you're willing to pay for the item.

If someone waits until the last moment and outbids you, then they obviously were willing to pay more than you.

If you failed to bid the maximum you'd be willing to pay, then you played the game wrong ... lower bids needing to be incremented manually when you see yourself outbid isn't how the game is played.

The system won't submit the Max bid you place automatically ... it will make the lowest bid it can to win the bidding and then your bid will only increase (up to the maximum) as other people indicate they would be willing to pay more ... just like being at a real auction.

I love ebay, I always wait til the last 30 sec to bid to be sure I get what I want. If you place your bid in advance, try auctionsniper.com
It will bid at the last moment for you.

You're not doing it right. It asks you what the maximum is you would be willing to pay. You are obviously typing in a smaller amount because later on after someone else bids higher, you want to increase it.
