I just read another question where one of the answerers referred to California as "the gay state," and I wondered: what is your own personal way to characterize California? Tell where you are from, which is relevant, of course.

dale5of7, meet scottc. Actually, though, Scott, we did not vote for Arnie as a Republican, but as an independent (I had hoped a Libertarian), and frankly, I think we were cheated. Arnie should have stood his ground and embraced the Libertarian Party, rather than sucking up to the Republicans.

La La Land is LA - Los Angeles. That is by no means the whole state! But I can see how others might think so, given its relationship to mass media.

I'm from Kansas. The best nickname I've heard for California is the land of fruits and nuts.

That is a very narrow view of what i understand cali to be like. I always just call it cali or calif. But think about it california is huge and would have to be mostly conservative to have elected Arnold its current republican govenor and former republican goveners. The whole state of california is not San Francisco. Its a pretty diverse state to try to characterize. It has a little of everything. From huge poluted cities and big super highways to places that are mostly agricultural and even some pristine wilderness. Hopefully California can be more and more known for organic farming as much of the industry did start there i belive.

California better not be "the gay state". I am not gay, and I love having sex for the rest of my life.
California is the best place to live for the awesome weather, better job opportunities, and one of the most expensive state to live in. California is a melting pot, whereas other states are segregated to this day.

I just call it California. But its neighbors to the north did launch a "Don't Californicate Oregon" campaign a few years back. (Judging from the beachfront development, cutthroat driving and general deterioration of our quality of life over the course of the past two decades, it didn't work.)
