it's not enough to quit the drugs, or any other related addiction. the rehabilitation process has to get started, and the peron in question, has to be prepared metally, physically, and temperamentally, to be a productive member of the society, by not being a burden, but to earn his bread and butter, by fair means. the acceptance of the world, has to reflect in action, by employing such pepole on the suitable jobs, giving them the first opportunity to be a part of the main-stream. employers are going to have biased attitudes, apprehensions, and anxiety, over the out put, and integrity of the now dry alcoholic, or a once a drug -addict. it's upto the labelled addict, to prove it otherwise, by showing sustained improvement. about alcoholics, it's said, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, so what about the drug addicts, then ?
until and unless, the addict has undergone therapy, detxification process, has overcome withdrawal symptoms, is regular, alert, and trustworthy, how would the society accept him only on his verbal assurance ?
so a kind and understanding employer, family, and a proper friend circle, that's what is required, to put the- once-addict-but -now-imroved-guy on the right path, continuous moral support by therapists, visits to the doctors to check if there is no relapse, and search into the psyche of the individual, why he or she had taken up to addiction, needs to be looked into, by qualified social workers, counselling the disturbed person, to once again build the former level of confidence in him.
and most importantly, the person's will power, does he really wants to lead a normal life, or does he want to live in his own world, free of worries due to the haze of marjuana, or crack, morphine , cocaine, heroin ?
help is available, only you should be willing, that's all !

There is no one answer to your question. If an addict maintains being clean, and by actions shows that he or she can be act reliably and be accountable for actions, then it is possible for him or her to move on to a much better life. In terms of employers accepting him or her, then, yes, based upon the person's actions, he or she would be accepted. There are many people who do not trust anyone whom they know has had issues with addiction. Often this is because they were raised by, or in a relationship with, an addict and hold deep seated resentments that they are unable or unwilling to move beyond. So, in that sense, they may never be accepted by everyone. What is surprising about that is, someone who does have a grudge against people with addiction may be employed by or work with someone who is a recovering addict without even knowing it. Due to misconceptions and prejudices, many people in recovery don't share that information as common knowledge to everyone they know.
PS Susan R apparently isn't aware that addiction is a disease, and a very difficult one to deal with. Or, perhaps she wouldn't be happy if her mother recovered from cancer.

It's one day at a time, doing the next right thing. Eventually, life will get better, bad habits replaced with good. You can't please everyone. Be the best You you can be. No one is without baggage.
I can only speak for myself. But, I admire certain actors or
rock stars who are able to quit and remain clean. I pull for the underdog. Turn your life around and help others by your example.
Don't be afraid to ask for help along the way.
Drugs aren't my issue. I remain true to myself, treating my fellow man the way I want to be treated. I am happy with the me I have become. I couldn't care less if the entire world accepted me. As long as I have a group of loved ones close in my life, that's all I need.

Maybe. Unfortanately it is a scar on his reputation. He will always need to be a step ahead to be accepted in the same way.
Best not to tell anyone. I've had drugs but not become addicted. So I would accept - but I don't think everyone out there is open minded enough.

not the entire world some places dont hire if they know of drug histories and plenty of uptight assholes look down their noses at people who've done drugs
but its still better to face being an ex-addict than face being an addict

Everyone can make mistakes and everyone deserves a second chance.
Personally, I admire people who find the strength to fight drugs and stay clean.
And I believe our society should be more open minded and support them as much as possible.
