Like the patterns perceived when eyes are shut or in total darkness. Personally, I like 'em!

every biological phenomena does not have a purpose. life has evolved so that any random phenomena that would decrease survivability are weeded out as much as possible by steady inter-generational competition, but there are lots of things that are just unintentional byproducts of the physical form.

Since you know what these patterns are called, I assume you know they're a result of perceiving your eye's internal anatomy for one reason or another. Phosphene patterns in particular are caused by applying pressure to the eye when closed; the increase of pressure and blood flow stimulates the retina in a way that causes the illusion of light.

It's sort of like asking why they designed car engines to make noise; the engine was designed to convert energy from incomplete combustion into mechanical torque, but the sound is simply an unavoidable byproduct of that design.

This is like a photo copier for the brain and allows you to recall small details for a small period of time. It was a survival mechanism originally.
