It happens with or without the A/C on. The car is a 1994 Buick Century Custom (V-6) with 66,000 original miles on it. Would this indicate a need for new thermostat? Recently, the radiator was inspected and functioning well. I already added extra Prestone coolant/ anti-freeze 50/50. Thanks for any help before I take it to the garage and spend MORE money. I recently replaced the fuel pump and filter, new brakes and heater coil.

you could need a new thermostat but ur cooling fan may also not be functioning properly. you me also need a new head gasket, this would be indicated by whit smoke with a sweet odor coming out the tail pipe. if everything seems to be operating fine then i would just have the cooling fan and thermostat checked out

Heres a test for ya.. Take the thermostat out of the car, put the car back together and crank the car... if the car runs without overheating again (do this in the cooler part of the day, btw) then you can assume that your thermostat is probably stuck closed and needs replacing.. Thermostats are cheap and are easily available at Autozone or any parts house :)

well first, lets be sure that the gauge is working properly, there is such a thing as the gauge not reading correctly, so first I would check the sending unit on the engine. second, if it turns out that the gauge is correct, the next thing would be the thermostat. the best way to test it is remove it from the engine, place it in a pan of boiling water, if it opens, it is working properly, but that is a most likely problem for overheating.

I would take a look at the thermostat, check the radiator for leaks and sometimes the water pipes can have very small cracks in them which are hard to find. good luck hope you find the prob.

When in doubt replace it. There cheap anyway and will eventually need to be replaced.
